Fallbrook is an unincorporated part of San Diego County, bordered by Camp Pendleton on the west, and located 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, as the crow flies. The fresh ocean air, fertile river valleys and the warm, sunny climate are a perfect recipe for making Fallbrook one of the finest agricultural areas in California.
HISTORY The rich history of Fallbrook goes back more than 100 years when, in 1860, the Vital Reche family opened a hotel for gold seekers. Soon a community sprang up that they named "Fall Brook" after a homestead the Reches had left in Pennsylvania. Today, the portion of Fallbrook that the Reche family homesteaded is now what is known as Live Oak County Park. Fallbrook homes for sale are close to the twenty-five acres of the Park which is a forest of giant oak trees, meandering streams, nature trails, and herbal and wildflower gardens graced with many varieties of birds and butterflies. In 1878, the post office was established within the hotel owned by the Reches and Vital was the first postmaster. Two years later 25 families were homesteading in the “official” Fall Brook District. Even though the railroad surveyed eastern Fall Brook District for a connecting line between the southern coast and the transcontinental railroad, a different route was ultimately chosen. (It wasn't until 1950 that the spelling of the name was officially changed from Fall Brook to Fallbrook.) Olives became a major crop in the 1920s and continued through WWII. That crop was eventually phased out in favor of the avocado and floral industries that are prominent in Fallbrook today. Other major crops now grown here are strawberries, tomatoes, and several sub-tropical fruits. SCHOOLS The first school was opened in 1876 and taught by the sister-in-law of Mrs. Reche. This building is now known as the Reche Clubhouse and used as a community center. Today, the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District and Fallbrook Union High School District serve most of the students of Fallbrook. There are also a few private schools serving Fallbrook students.
