Located in southwestern Riverside County, California, Murrieta is a city of over 100,000 as of 2008, more than doubling its number of citizens recorded in the 2000 census. That makes it one of the fastest growing cities in the state. Many consider Murrieta a bedroom community for San Diego and Orange County and Temecula.
HISTORY In 1873, when Esequial Murrieta saw the land in what is now southwestern Riverside County, it was beautiful with green valleys, open spaces, towering oak and sycamore trees, and natural hot springs. It reminded him of his native Spain. So, he bought 52,000 acres for sheep farming. Instead of sheep farming, he returned to Spain and married, and handed over his holdings to his younger brother Juan. By 1852 the Southern California Railroad laid tracks linking the Murrieta valley to the SCR's southern transcontinental route and by 1890 Murrieta was experiencing a boom. But it was the natural springs that made the area ripe for tourism and the Murrieta Hot Springs Resort flourished during the first part of the 1900s; that is, until the trains stopped serving the area. It wasn't until 50 years later that the community experienced a new boom that began the next period of growth.
