Temecula is a derivative of the Luiseno Indian word "Temecunga", meaning "place of the sun". The Spanish mispronounced the name and ultimately the name evolved into "Temecula" which is thought to translate as "where the sun breaks through the mist".
HISTORY The rich history of the area dates back to 900 AD, but the first known white settler was a Franciscan padre who arrived in the valley in 1797. Early records dating from the early 1800s were destroyed in the great San Francisco earthquake in 1906. However, it is reported that trappers arrived in 1831, and by the mid-1840s, California was about to change out of the hands of Mexico through land grants. This triggered the "romantic era" in early California history of the rancheros and vaqueros. Change was brought to the area with the stagecoach lines. Settlers were arriving and the mail delivered by stage was a key link to the rest of the country. By 1859 the first inland southern California post office was established in Temecula. Further change came in 1882 with the rail line from National City to Temecula. Many exciting chapters in California continued through the 19th and early 20th century. It was not until 1989 that the area, which had become known as Ranchero California, was actually incorporated and the name officially became Temecula.
